Folks,
Yesterday, Payday Report’s multimedia editor, Amos Wolf, and I flew out to LA as a result of a generous donation by reader of Payday Report. Currently, we are down at SEIU Local 99 headquarters, where 30,000 LA School Employees are preparing to meet with LA Mayor Karen Bass to avert a strike tomorrow.
From what we hear, it appears unlikely that a deal will be struck to avert a strike. While both the teachers’ union and the administrators’ union have agreed to tentative deals to avert a strike, however, SEIU Local 99’s members, who make poverty wages, simply can’t afford to cut a deal that doesn’t raise their pay.
If the 30,000 members of SEIU Local 99 went on strike tomorrow, another 40,000 teachers would strike in solidarity, as would 10,000 staff members across various departments throughout the city; swelling the size of the strike to 70,000 union members.
A strike by 70,000 teachers, just a few weeks before May Day, could inspire activists from all over the country and help swell support for the May Day movement. Payday will be on the ground, covering the strike closely.
While our travel out here was covered and our place to stay is free, we still need to cover food and gas costs in LA, which is quite expensive. So, please if you can, donate a few bucks to help us cover this crucial strike.
