Popular movements, trade unions, youth organizations, and political parties from across the African continent have continued to mobilize in solidarity with Cuba in the face of escalating economic pressure and sanctions.

Following the release of a solidarity letter coordinated by Pan Africanism Today and endorsed by over 35 political parties and popular movements, organizations across Africa have stepped up actions in support of Cuba. These efforts have included delivering letters to Cuban embassies across the continent reaffirming long-standing ties rooted in anti-imperialist struggle and internationalism, while also raising awareness about Cuba’s current plight under intensifying economic pressure.

Solidarity actions continue to denounce the decades-long US blockade against Cuba. The joint statement affirmed the commitment to “building the organized power of workers, peasants, women, and youth” while strengthening anti-imperialist consciousness across the continent.

Continental actions

In Benin, a coalition of progressive organizations, including the Communist Party of Benin and the Trade Union Confederation of Workers of Benin formally presented a solidarity letter to the Cuban Embassy. The delegation emphasized that solidarity is not just symbolic but a crucial source of strength for the Cuban people during these difficult times.

Similarly, in Mali, a delegation from a popular education institution called the Modibo Keïta School met with Cuban diplomatic representatives on March 24, 2026. The group supports Cuba for historically standing alongside the African continent in its struggles for independence.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Young Peasants League of the DRC had earlier delivered a message of solidarity directly addressed to the Cuban leadership and its people. The organization highlighted the importance of defending sovereignty and preserving the revolutionary legacy of Fidel Castro, describing Cuba as a “guiding light” for global struggles for liberation.

The president of the group, Blanco Blanchard Kiyongo, told Peoples Dispatch. “Our initiative is part of our solidarity with Cuba and demonstrates our support for Cuba, which has played a historic role for Africa through the leadership of Fidel Castro, as part of the long-standing Africa–Cuba friendship. Cuba has been one of the key countries in our struggle, and we expressed our support for the Cuban people in the face of threats from the United States.”

He added that the delegation was received by the Cuban Ambassador, where the message of solidarity was formally delivered.

In Ghana, the Socialist Movement of Ghana joined the continent-wide mobilization by presenting its own solidarity message to the Cuban Ambassador. The movement reaffirmed its alignment with broader African struggles against imperialism and economic domination.

Workers’ solidarity in South Africa

In South Africa, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa issued a strong statement condemning what it termed a “barbaric energy siege” against Cuba. The union linked Cuba’s current challenges, including electricity blackouts, to the impact of sanctions and restrictions on fuel imports.

NUMSA also recalled Cuba’s historic role in Africa’s liberation, particularly during the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, where Cuban forces played a decisive role in defeating apartheid-era military aggression. The union stressed that African workers “will not forget” this legacy of international solidarity.

In its demands, NUMSA called for the immediate lifting of the US blockade, increased humanitarian and technical support for Cuba, and stronger cooperation among BRICS nations to ensure energy supplies reach the island.

These coordinated actions across Benin, Mali, Ghana, the DRC, and South Africa are more than diplomatic gestures, they are part of a growing political alignment rooted in shared histories of anti-colonial struggle and socialist internationalism, and more coordinated actions are expected in different countries in the following weeks.
