Texas Rep. and House Budget Committee chair Jodey Arrington wants to further slash social welfare programs like Medicaid and SNAP in order to foot the bill for Trump’s Iran war. “Fraud” is often cited by Republicans as justification for slashing such programs, but data shows intentional fraud by participants is extremely rare: According to a 2023 USDA report, of 26,000 of SNAP applicants, only .1% were referred for administrative or criminal review, and undocumented immigrants have also never been eligible to receive SNAP as Republicans claim.
