Israeli forces terrorised Palestinians praying near the third-holiest site in Islam today, on the morning of Eid al-Fitr. Worshippers fled as their attackers fired tear gas into crowds at a gate leading into Jerusalem’s Old City that is a few hundred metres from the al-Aqsa mosque. Israel has closed the mosque since February 2026, citing the “security situation” and the war on Iran, while Old Jerusalem has been on lockdown since October 7, 2023. Muslims are banned from praying inside the ancient mosque, with many Palestinians condemning Israel for exploiting security tensions to further exert control over Arab Muslim life. It will be the first Eid that the mosque is closed to worshippers since 1967.
