Foshan is a city of 9 million, in Guangdong province. In less than 30 years following its official designation as Chinese industry cluster for furniture manufacturing, Foshan factories now build half the furniture sold across the world.
Foshan’s takeover of home furnishings is typical of hundreds of other cities and industry clusters across China, and hundreds more sub-categories of manufacturing specialties and product lines.
A key element of China’s industrial strategy is enormous, small-city-sized districts for factory showrooms and wholesaling. These hypermalls showcase products from thousands of local companies and attract business buyers from across the world.
