On March 12th, thanks to a collaboration between workers unions and local movements, a train transporting armored vehicles and weapons was stopped at Pisa station. The train was forced to turn back, accumulating a delay of at least eight hours.

This action not only demonstrates the importance of solidarity between workers and activists, but also that war and its preparations can be resisted on an everyday basis.

Below is a translation of the statement published by Movimento No Base, a collective struggling against the construction of a military base in Coltano (PI). The base’s planned location is tied to its proximity to Camp Darby, thought to be the largest U.S. weapons depot outside of the United States and a strategic hub supporting U.S. military operations across the Mediterranean.

Resisting War, Struggling for Peace

Statement from the No Base Movement on the arms blockade of 12 March 2026

Push war back. Drive it back.

This is what the movement did yesterday, through a blockade lasting over six hours on the railway tracks at Pisa Centrale station. A freight train of 32 wagons, carrying dozens of armoured military vehicles and just as many containers whose contents we can only imagine.

A result that echoes the extraordinary days at the port of Livorno and in other ports across Italy and Europe, where workers refused to be part of the machinery of war, deserting their posts and blocking the movement of arms.

Yesterday we demonstrated once again, through a peaceful and determined blockade, that we can be concretely effective. Yesterday evening we gave reality to our desire for Peace: our bodies stopped the train of death. It was stopped by our unity and by the awareness that we stand on the right side of history: the side that rejects the logic of war at any cost, rearmament, the use of every civilian infrastructure for military purposes, and the devastation of our land to fuel the war economy.

We have shown that with the right balance of forces, we can turn the impossible into the necessary. By uniting the capacities of workers, committees, movements and citizens, we can stay one step ahead of them. From Livorno to Pisa, from Collesalvetti to Pontedera, an entire region mobilised in many different ways to stop this train.

Everywhere, with courage and clarity of purpose, we can stop weapons and obstruct war. We can turn back a train loaded with armoured vehicles. We can halt the construction of the military base in the San Rossore park at San Piero a Grado and in Pontedera. We can be sand in the gears of war.

In Pisa, war did not pass yesterday, but this is only a first step. We know the train has probably taken other routes. We know that many others pass through without our knowledge. We see the policies of austerity that are channeling billions into war and away from the needs of society.

Today more than ever we must take a stand: to be for Peace means to be partisans, to resist the world war, to engage everywhere and in many ways to obstruct war and to show that the people do not want to be part of it.

Yesterday we breathed “conflict” and liberation, a milestone that gives strength and energy to the entire pacifist and anti-war movement in our country, but one we need to build on and keep organising. That is why it will be crucial for everyone to be at our general assembly on Tuesday the 17th. Let us organise new acts of desertion, disarmament and blockade together. Let’s build peace through struggle.

Resistere alla guerra, lottare per la pace

Respingere la guerra. Ricacciarla indietro.

È quello che il movimento ha fatto ieri, attraverso un blocco di oltre sei ore sui binari alla stazione di Pisa centrale. Un treno merci di 32 vagoni, con decine di mezzi blindati militari e altrettanti container il cui contenuto possiamo solo immaginarlo.

Un risultato che ricalca le straordinarie giornate al porto di Livorno e negli altri porti d’Italia e d’Europa dove i lavoratori e le lavoratrici hanno disertato, rifiutando di essere parte dell’ingranaggio della guerra e bloccando il traffico di armi.

Ieri abbiamo dimostrato di nuovo con un blocco pacifico e determinato, che possiamo essere concretamente efficaci. Ieri sera abbiamo dato realtà al nostro desiderio di Pace: i nostri corpi hanno fermato il treno della morte. L’hanno fermato  la nostra unione e la consapevolezza di stare dalla parte giusta della storia, quella che rifiuta la logica della guerra ad ogni costo, il riarmo, l’utilizzo di ogni infrastruttura civile per scopi militari, la devastazione del nostro territorio per incentivare l’economia di guerra.

Abbiamo dimostrato che con i giusti rapporti di forza possiamo trasformare l’impossibile in necessario. Unendo le capacità di lavoratori, comitati, movimenti, cittadini, possiamo essere un passo avanti a loro. Da Livorno a Pisa, da Collesalvetti a Pontedera, un intero territorio si è mobilitato in tanti modi per bloccare questo treno.

Ovunque con coraggio e chiarezza dei nostri obiettivi, possiamo fermare le armi e intralciare la guerra. Possiamo rimandare indietro un treno carico di mezzi blindati. Possiamo fermare la costruzione della base militare nel parco di San Rossore a San Piero a Grado e a Pontedera. Possiamo essere sabbia nell’ingranaggio della guerra.

A Pisa la guerra ieri non è passata, ma è solo un primo passo: sappiamo che il treno avrà preso altre rotte. Sappiamo che tanti altri passano senza che ne siamo a conoscenza. Vediamo le politiche di miseria che stanno portando miliardi alla guerra e non ai bisogni della società.

Oggi più che mai dobbiamo prendere posizione: essere per la Pace significa essere partigiani e partigiane, resistere alla guerra mondiale, metterci in gioco ovunque e in molti modi per essere d’ostacolo alla guerra e dimostrare che il popolo non vuole farne parte.

Ieri abbiamo respirato confitto e liberazione, una tappa che dà forza ed energia a tutto il movimento pacifista e contro la guerra del nostro Paese ma che abbiamo bisogno di rilanciare e continuare a organizzare. Per questo sarà importante esserci tutti e tutte alla nostra assemblea generale martedì 17, organizziamo insieme nuove iniziative  di diserzione, di disarmo, di blocco.

Costruiamo la pace con la lotta.
