The ongoing war of aggression being waged by the United States and the Israeli Zionist entity against Iran constitute grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. The large-scale air and missile attacks launched by the US-Israel war machine against Iran have devastated cities, killed hundreds of civilians including children, and destroyed critical infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. In response to the attacks launched against its territory, Iran has carried out retaliatory strikes targeting US military bases across the region.
Iran has long been targeted because it asserts its political independence against US imperialist domination. Like other countries that refuse to subordinate their national development to the interests of US monopoly capital, Iran has faced decades of sanctions, destabilization, and attempts at regime change.
At the same time, Iran’s strategic importance in the global energy system makes it a central target of US imperialist control. As one of the world’s major oil producers and an important source of energy imports for China, Iran stands at the crossroads of inter-imperialist struggles over energy, and critical trade routes. In this sense, the current assault against Iran recalls the relentless US campaign against Venezuela, another independent oil-producing country whose resources and political orientation challenged US control.
But more than anything else, the US war against Iran is symptomatic of the deepening crisis of imperialism. Despite remaining the dominant imperialist power in the world today, the US faces persistent economic problems. US economic growth is projected at only around 2.6% in 2026, while chronic fiscal deficits continue to widen, reaching 7-8% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and public debt is projected to rise 140% of GDP by 2031. This prolonged period of sluggish growth, rising inter-imperialist rivalry, and growing instability in global markets have heightened the insecurity of the US. In its attempt to reassert dominance and control strategic resources, it increasingly resorts to military aggression and war.
As a result, the peoples of Iran and the rest of the region are once again forced to endure immense suffering as cities are bombed, economies disrupted, and millions of civilians placed in danger. Particularly vulnerable are migrant workers across the region. Among them are an estimated 2.4 million overseas Filipinos working in Gulf and West Asian countries, many of whom face heightened risks of displacement, economic hardship, and insecurity as the conflict escalates.
Meanwhile, Marcos Jr. has proven himself yet again to be a submissive pawn of US imperialism. His administration continues to deceive the Filipino people by insisting that the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites are not US bases. In reality, these facilities function as forward operating bases of the US military, with access even restricted to many Filipino nationals while US forces freely use Philippine territory for military deployments and war preparations. Marcos Jr.’s puppetry is further illustrated by his eagerness to align with Trump’s agenda, accepting an invitation to join Trump’s so-called “board of peace” while simultaneously lobbying for the reactionary Philippine state to secure a seat in the United Nations Security Council, in a futile attempt to project diplomatic relevance while remaining firmly under US influence.
At the same time, Marcos Jr. has miserably failed to take decisive action to ensure the safety and welfare of millions of OFWs in the Gulf states who are now directly exposed to the dangers of war. Nor has the regime taken meaningful steps to shield Filipino workers and poor households from the rising inflation triggered by surging oil prices brought about by the conflict in Iran. Instead of defending national sovereignty and protecting the Filipino people, the Marcos administration continues to serve foreign interests while leaving its own citizens vulnerable at home and abroad.
And yet, Trump’s war drive will not stop at Iran. Trump continues to pursue an aggressive strategy aimed at constricting and containing China. Within this framework, the Philippines has been increasingly transformed into a forward military base for US forces in the Asia-Pacific.
This poses enormous danger for the Filipino people. Unlike Iran, which possesses missile and air-defense systems capable of intercepting and responding to attacks, the Philippines has no comparable defensive capabilities. Yet the presence and expansion of US military bases on Philippine soil make the country a potential frontline target in the event of a direct confrontation between the US and China. In such a scenario, the Filipino people risk becoming collateral damage in a catastrophic war between major imperialist powers.
As long as the Philippines remains a semicolonial and semifeudal society subordinated to US imperialism, the country will continue to serve as a pawn and military outpost in imperialist wars. The decisive force against imperialist wars is the organized action of the masses and the leadership of the proletariat. The fighting Filipino masses must wage revolutionary class struggle against the US-Marcos regime and the comprador-bureaucrat ruling class that subordinates the nation to US imperialist interests. Only through advancing the national democratic struggle, dismantling US imperialist domination, ending feudal exploitation and bureaucrat capitalism, and building a genuinely sovereign and democratic society, can the Filipino people secure just and lasting peace, and national liberation, and contribute to the broader fight to end imperialist wars.
