“This war has hardened Iran, which is exactly the opposite of what President Trump imagined.” Iranian American political scientist Vali Nasr says that whenever foreign powers take out a country’s leader, it only serves to radicalise the next generation of militants. Since the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran knows it is facing an existential threat. “That’s not the point at which you’re going to get more moderate forces coming to the front,” says Nasr. “It’s the ones that are willing to fight and die to save the country that become the prominent voices.”
