The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has welcomed announcements by the Netherlands and Iceland that they are joining South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Both nations filed their notification to the ICJ on 11 March 2026.
Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Brazil, Belize, Colombia, Mexico and Türkiye had already joined the case. Israel has murdered hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza so far in its continuing genocide. The occupation has also destroyed all schools and universities and most of Gaza’s hospitals, as well as deliberately targeting hundreds of journalists and their families, first responders, medical staff and rescue workers. Its starvation blockade of those who survive continues alongside daily bombing and ongoing land theft in preparation for its US-assisted annexation of Gaza.
CAIR, which is based in Washington, D.C. and is the biggest Muslim human rights organisation in the US, said:
We welcome the principled decisions by the Netherlands and Iceland to join South Africa’s genocide case at the International Court of Justice. Their participation strengthens the global demand for accountability and reinforces the obligation of all nations to uphold the Genocide Convention.
Our own government must listen to the American people and support international law by ending U.S. support for the Israeli government’s crimes, including the genocide in Gaza.
