WASHINGTON — Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin’s nomination hearing to be the next Department of Homeland Security secretary is scheduled for next week.
President Donald J. Trump last week fired DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and nominated the Republican senator for the post on March 5. Trump said he hoped that Mullin would start his role at the end of this month.
Mullin, a Cherokee Nation citizen, will sit in front of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on March 18 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
If the Senate confirms his nomination, he will be the first Native American to lead the Homeland Security department, the second Native American to run a cabinet agency, and the third Native American to be in the presidential cabinet.
Deb Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, was the first Native American and Native woman to lead an agency.
When Haaland served in Congress, she said her colleague, Mullin, co-sponsored some of her bills as she made sure her legislation had bipartisan support so the bills could be passed. They both served in the U.S. House at the time.
“And of course, I wish him the best, right?” she told ICT Tuesday. “What’s happened in our country over the last several months, three people being shot in the streets of our cities. I hope that he can bring some calm.”
She hopes he can implement “what our ancestors have taught us,” including “to respect people, to be kind, all of those things. I hope that that will happen and I’m sure it will under his leadership,” she said.
