Acclaimed Irish novelist Sally Rooney has said it is an “honour” to stand with Palestine despite the backlash she has faced for doing so. Addressing a crowd at the People’s Congress for the Hague Group in Amsterdam, organised by Progressive International, the Normal People author said: “For those of us living at the heart of empire, those of us who have the extraordinary privilege of a public platform, it is not a question of paying a price. “On the contrary, we should see and say that it is the honour of our lives to stand with Palestine.” Rooney has previously been advised to avoid travel to the UK after expressing support for Palestine Action, the direct action group proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July last year. The proscription has subsequently been ruled unlawful. The Hague Group was formed in January 2025 by several countries, including Colombia, South Africa and Malaysia. The bloc has committed to ending arms shipments to Israel and pursuing justice against Israeli war criminals.
