Last night, March 8, around 11:00 pm, a tactical offensive unit of the Romeo Nanta Command-New People’s Army (RNC-NPA) set the equipment of W.D Anglo Agri Farm into fire in Hacienda Baling, Barangay Libacao, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, paralyzing the farm’s logistical backbone. It rendered 3 tractors, 1 crane, and 1 backhoe useless.
The total economic damage, valued at around ₱30,000,000.00-₱40,000,000.00 serves as a sanction against Wilfred D. Anglo, owner of W.D. Anglo Agri Farm for its exploitation of farmworkers who are paid a pittance while they wallow in luxury. Anglo’s operation reveals a grim reality of the unlivable wages in the sprawling sugarcane fields of Himamaylan City:
- Hilamon (Weeding) – ₱2,400 per hectare
- Patdan/Pagtanom (Planting) – ₱930 per laksa
- Tapas (Cutting/Harvesting) – ₱220 per ton
- Kamada (Stacking) – ₱3.00
While the Regional Wage Board’s floor is already a “starvation wage,” Anglo’s rates fall even further into the abyss of feudal cruelty, condemning the farm workers to a life of systemic starvation. This stand in stark, insulting contrast to the ₱1,200 National Minimum Wage demanded by the Filipino working class to meet the basic cost of living.
Furthermore, these workers, many of them have spent their entire lives tilling this soil, are denied even the most basic benefits. To ensure their total subjugation, Anglo acts as a predatory usurer, shackling his workers with loans at a staggering 10% weekly interest.
Let this serve as a unequivocal warning to the comprador-bourgeoisie and the despotic land-grabbers of Negros: Your wealth is not a shield, and your private security forces and the military state agents who are defending you are but paper tigers.
The RNC-NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to defend the rights of the masses. As long as the very hands that feed the nation continue to starve, every Red fighter will persist to dismantle the semi-feudal and semi-colonial system in the country. We will dare to struggle until the land is finally owned by those who till it.
