CEBU CITY – At dawn time on March 7, 2026 residents living at the Binaliw landfill in Cebu City held a rosary and candle lighting to pray for the victims of the collapse that took the lives of 36 workers.

They committed to holding a prayer every first Saturday of the month to pray for justice for the victims amid all the calamities that hit the province. Attended by community organizers and environmentalists, the Sta. Ana Homeowners Association reported the effect of the landfill to their day-to-day life.

“Many days, an extreme foul smell would surround us especially after a heavy rainfall. Several bleach and detergents are one of the bestsellers here for my neighbors to use to get rid of the flies,” said Melona Pan, a sari-sari store owner living in Barangay Binaliw.

“And if we can’t help it, we would just close our doors and windows tightly and hide in our bedrooms,” she added.
