One decade after the assassination of the Honduran environmental and indigenous leader, Berta Cáceres, Mira Feminisms and Democracies joins with hundreds of organizations across the globe to celebrate and honor her life, and demand full truth and justice in her case.

Berta touched the lives of many people. She inspired resistance to so-called “development” projects that violate the law, destroy the environment, displace communities and spur violence and corruption in all our countries. Her struggle to save her beloved Rio Guarlcarque and the communities surrounding it taught us that when we organize and persevere, we can prevail against powerful forces.

The think tank Mira Feminisms and Democracieswould not exist without Berta´s example. I had the great privilege to work alongside her on occasion and the experience stayed with me forever. She combined her commitment to feminism, internationalism, environmentalism and indigenous rights, showing us that they are inseparable in all true anti-systemic work and to create the future we want and need–a future that respects all living creatures and the natural forces that sustain us.

In these times of unfettered violence and avarice, we need Berta more than ever. But we know she is here, among us, in our hearts and in our minds, where the lessons of her movement-building practice and praxis remain the standard we strive to reach.

The demand for justice led by her family and her organization COPINH has been a long road. It is not enough to convict the killers, or the person who gave the direct order. Indisputable evidence proves who was behind the crime and we must say their names and call them to account: Jacobo Atala, José Eduardo Atala, Pedro Atala, Daniel Atala Midence, the Honduran government and the financial backers–the Dutch FMO bank and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.

For this reason, we surge global support for COPINH’s calls for action:

  1. Keep alive Berta Cáceres’s words and example to confront the challenges we face today with joy and boldness.
  2. Demand that the Honduran Government capture and try members of the Atala Zablah family as the masterminds of the assassination.
  3. Urge the international community to increase efforts for full justice for Berta Cáceres and all defenders of rights and territory.
  4. Call for unity within the Honduran social and popular movement in the Berta Cáceres Front for Rights and Territories and build solidarity to strengthen it.

¡Berta Vive, la Lucha Sigue! ¡Berta Vive, COPINH Sigue!
