Last week a small group of us did a “No War With Iran” banner drop over I95 in Norwalk, CT and 4 people showed up. One week later (and 12 hours into the unprovoked US/Israel war of aggression on Iran) we did another “No War With Iran” banner drop and 25 people showed up. Groups that included The Peace Pact, World BEYOND War, Veterans For Peace, The New Haven Peace Council and others were represented. Channel 12 News filmed the event and interviewed a number of the participants: video here.

Once again, hundreds of motorists on I95 (which is the busiest roadway in the United States) — as well as on East Avenue in Norwalk — signaled their support with enthusiastic honking, waves, and flashing peace signs. The U.S. people do not want this war. Resistance to this war is huge among Democrats, Independents, and a large segment of the Republicans. The propaganda no longer works quite like it used to. Polls show 70-80% of US citizens are against this war. When the casualties become clear; which will undoubtedly include U.S. “service” members; the opposition to this war will only increase.

The fact that the U.S. government, in a bipartisan fashion, ignores the wishes of large majorities of its citizens suggests that Americans will have to move away from being complacent voters who show up at the polls every four years and learn to become activists. One of the areas that should be considered for activism is the antiwar movement. It should be obvious to anyone paying attention for the last 25 years that war is devastating to the nations our government targets with its bombs, missiles, sanctions, and regime change operations while also being devastating here at home. The 20 year war on terror cost us some $8 trillion, killed 4.5 million people and created 38 million refugees. Some 30,000 “service” members and veterans took their own lives over this period, victims of the moral injury of war. This is some five times the number of “service” members that were killed in the line of duty in these wars.

These endless wars also prevented national focus of our resources, talents, and attention on the concerns of most Americans including healthcare, poverty, affordability, housing, infrastructure, violence, addiction epidemics, education, or sustainability. Constant war has had the additional consequence of boomeranging its violence home while undermining our rights and further eroding our democracy. It is long past time that we cast aside the U.S. government’s violent and aggressive policies and push it towards cooperation with the international community. Living by the laws of the jungle will end up destroying all of civilization. We need to create the only sustainable path forward: peace, justice for all, and care for all life on this planet.
