Joshua Orta, the sole witness to the fatal ICE shooting of his close friend Ruben Ray Martinez in March 2025, has died in a car crash in San Antonio, TX. This was after he gave a lengthy statement to the Martinez family’s lawyers disputing Dept. of Homeland Security’s version of events. Orta was the passenger in Martinez’s car last March when they approached a group of local police and federal agents directing traffic. DHS alleged Martinez tried to run over a federal agent, leading to another agent to fire “defensive shots.” However, Orta in his statement said Martinez did not hit anyone. According to his account, officers surrounded the car, and a federal agent fired into Martinez’s open window without warning. Then, according to Orta, officers handcuffed Martinez and waited at least ten minutes before providing medical aid.
