What a powerful show of force – Tuesday February 17 saw more than 50 communities from coast to coast to coast rise up on the No More Loopholes Day of Action to demand that our government stop Canadian weapons from fueling war crimes. Our actions were covered in local media from Toronto to Yellowknife, from Victoria and Maple Ridge to Owen Sound. Across the country, constituents rallied to push their MPs to vote YES on the No More Loopholes Act. To pick justice and human rights, instead of ongoing complicity in genocide.

In just the last couple months we’ve documented Canadian armoured vehicles being used by ICE, Canadian sensors being used in the US attack on Venezuela and a constant flow of Canadian explosives and weapons to Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza. Canada’s unregulated arms exports to the U.S. fuel all of this violence – the stakes of Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act, have never been clearer. And with the critical vote coming up in just a couple weeks, this is the moment to flip as many MPs as possible to VOTE YES.

It’s time to force the Liberal leadership to contend with the massive gaps in our arms export regulations – gaps that are keeping Canada complicit in many of the most grievous human rights abuses of our time.

At more than 50 actions across the country, thousands collectively pushed our MPs to pick a side: Will they continue to funnel unrestricted and unregulated arms to Israel’s ongoing genocide, Trump’s illegal wars, and ICE’s campaign of terror? Or will they Vote Yes to close the loopholes, respect international law, and take a huge step forward towards a real arms embargo on Israel?

Several groups reported back that they’d shown up to find that MPs had shuttered their doors – closing their offices down to avoid having to listen to their constituents. A number of organizers even reported rows of police cars on site to greet them instead of their elected representatives.

This is shameful behaviour on the part of our MPs. But it’s also a sign that we are getting their attention and having an impact.

The government would have liked nothing more than to sweep this bill, and the massive flaws in our arms export regime that it seeks to address, under the rug. Together, we are making that impossible.

The thousands of calls, emails, visits, rallies, and conversations with neighbours –– they are making a difference. MPs know we are watching. They know that a “No” vote on Bill C-233 will rightly be seen by their constituents as an endorsement of Canada’s complicity in war crimes.

This week’s day of action came on the tails of a month of huge growing momentum and support for the No More Loopholes Act this and excellent recent media coverage, with op-eds in The Hill Times and The Globe and Mail, written by a human rights expert and former Liberal cabinet ministers, urging the Canadian government to support this bill. A CBC investigation also dropped, showing that the government itself was investigating the risk of US-bound weapons ending up in Israel over a year ago! Watch a video interview with Arms Embargo organizers unpacking all of this here.

We have a few more weeks until the critical vote on this bill. This is the time to keep their phones ringing and their staff occupied. Find your MP’s number here, and see the script below to get you started (and remember: we have addressed common rebuttals here to help you out). No more lies. No more loopholes. We demand a full arms embargo on Israel and an end to Canada’s role arming and fueling war crimes.
