Progressive groups under the broad anti-corruption alliance Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK, People’s Anti-Corruption Movement) launched the first series of Black Friday Protests on February 13. This resumes the weekly anti-corruption protests against the Marcos regime that began in September 2025.

The first series this year saw actions held in cities in the National Capital Region (NCR), Iloilo and Tacloban City. Workers, urban poor residents, youth and students, teachers, health workers, government employees, and progressive political parties joined the protests. Their call: “Continue the fight against corruption! Hold all those involved accountable!”

Protests led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-Manila were held in Mendiola, at Altura Market in Sampaloc, along C.M. Recto Avenue, and in front of Manila Science High School along Taft Avenue. The actions condemned the grave corruption of the Marcos regime and of the local government in Manila, the group said.

They said Manileños continue to suffer severe flooding because of corruption in flood control projects. The group also denounced the privatization and commercialization of markets, the issue of garbage collection fee, demolition of urban poor communities, the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project that will harm people’s health and livelihoods, reclamation projects, militarization of campuses, and others. “Let us pour out our outrage in the streets and show our united strength to fight fascism and bureaucrat-capitalism!” they said.

In Quezon City, programs were held outside Sto. Domingo Church, at the University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, and in front of Miriam College on Katipunan Avenue. In Navotas City, the protest was held at Agora Market. Among those who joined the protest at the market was the women’s group Gabriela-Camanava, which called to “Remove the VAT! Jail the corrupt!”

Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) NCR Union teacher members also held activities and gatherings in their respective public schools in NCR. Department of Social Welfare and Development employees also took action in their offices under the leadership of their union, the Social Welfare Employees Association of the Philippines-NCR.

In Iloilo, progressive organizations and students of UP Visayas gathered for a protest. In Tacloban City, youth launched a protest action at RTR Plaza.

Progressive groups in all these protests called on Filipinos to join anti-corruption protests this coming February 25, along with marking the 40th EDSA People Power uprising anniversary. The main action that day will be held at EDSA, led by KBKK. The group also led the anti-corruption protest action of 100,000 on September 21, 2025 and of 20,000 on November 30, 2025 at Luneta Park, Manila.
