On Jan. 26, Takamori Hirayama began a hunger strike in front of Japan’s Ministry of Defense in solidarity with Gaza. Hirayama, founder of the Association of National Defense Academy Graduates Against Genocide, is protesting the government’s potential purchase of drones from Israel Aerospace Industries. Hirayama and the Association are demanding the Japanese government exclude Israeli-made drones from its drone program, cease acquisition of Israeli-produced equipment altogether and sever all ties with Israeli defense contractors, and establish a new “business and human rights department” to ensure all future defense purposes comply with human rights law.
