“Not one of you leave Gaza. It’s death. Death!” Israel has reopened the Rafah crossing, the only route through which Palestinians can move between Gaza and Egypt. It places extreme restrictions over who can enter and leave Gaza, with no more than 50 patients with urgent medical needs permitted to depart per day with two relatives. Since 7 October 2023, up to 100,000 Palestinians have likely left Gaza. Under this system, it would take years for those people to return. It raises questions over the intentions behind the opening of the crossing. Israel has faced accusations for decades that it’s true goal is ethnical cleansing: removing the local Palestinian population from Gaza to achieve its settler colonialist goals. No Palestinians who left Gaza before October 2023 are now allowed back.
