Student councils, progressive groups, and youth formations gathered immediately at the reopening of campuses this January to protest in their respective schools. Hundreds of students assembled to continue defending their democratic rights, hold the Marcos regime accountable for rampant corruption, and resist repression.
Across the University of the Philippines (UP) System, protests erupted from Baguio City to Davao City. Students dubbed these actions as “first day fight,” or new semester opening-day protests.
According to the UP Office of the Student Regent, students must continue their struggles as the new semester opens. It added that the people’s scholars are determined to confront these challenges this year.
More than 550 students marched in UP Los Baños in Laguna to protest on January 19. They protested again on January 23. Student councils, organizations, fraternities and sororities widely participated in the actions.
Over 100 UP Manila students joined the first campus protest on January 19. On the same day, councils and groups also held protests at UP Visayas Miag-ao and UP Tacloban. On January 20, hundreds mobilized for protest actions at UP Baguio, UP Clark in Pampanga, UP Diliman, and UP Cebu. In UP Diliman, students launched further protests on January 22 and 27.
The UP Open University Student Council also protested at its facility in Quezon City on January 24. In UP Mindanao, students mobilized on January 27 at the Davao City campus.
Polytechnic University of the Philippines student councils and progressive campus groups held local protest actions twice, on January 15 and 21, in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Technological University of the Philippines-Manila students took to protest on January 19.
Actions in private universities
At Saint Louis University in Baguio City, youth and students protested on January 12. The same day, youth from Far Eastern University in Morayta, Manila also mobilized.
On January 19, progressive groups at the University of Santo Tomas held a discussion on the Marcos regime’s fascism, red-tagging, and direct attacks on academic freedom in the university. They followed it with a protest that afternoon at the campus gate.
At De La Salle University-Manila on Taft Avenue, students launched a protest on January 5. The administration blatantly suppressed and halted the demonstration.
Ateneo de Manila University student groups protested inside the campus on January 8, 16, and 24.
On January 23, students from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City protested, opposing the proposed tuition fee increase in the university.
