From its invasion of Egypt to its involvement in training military dictatorships across Africa, Pan-African organiser Prudence Iticka lays out a series of historical examples to argue that Israel poses a serious threat to the continent’s interests.

“Something people don’t really know,” she explains, “is that Israel has been heavily involved in supporting some of the most brutal dictators we’ve had in Africa, helping to build and fund what were essentially personal Gestapo-style police forces.”

Prudence argues that African opposition to Israel should not be driven solely by solidarity with Palestinians. Rather, she says, it should stem from a deeper understanding that Israel forms part of a wider imperial project, one that has worked to keep Africa trapped in neo-colonial dependency, weaken its economies and destabilise its states in order to extract cheap resources, particularly in mineral-rich countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
