Berke Sheikh Radwan used to be a basin where rainwater was collected, then filtered through a desalination plant and made accessible to Gazans. It has since become one of the hundreds of water infrastructure sites destroyed. Now, Berke is full of rubbish, sewage, and bacteria, causing disease and sickness in the surrounding Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood.
In October 2025 Libre X. Sankara gives us this firsthand report for Sovereign Media from besieged northern Gaza.
97% of the water is undrinkable. Over 85% of water and sanitation infrastructure has been damaged, and we are unable to carry out proper repairs due to the risk of death. Water infrastructure is a vital part of public health, and its collapse has immediate and long-term negative effects for Gazans. Water stations, trucks, and even people waiting in line for water have been attacked, leading to massacres and injuries.
This is a huge humanitarian issue. There needs to be an international effort to rebuild water infrastructure and improve water for Gazans. Attention needs to be drawn, and the Israeli occupation forces must be called for weaponizing access to water.
