The Trump administration fucked around long enough. Today they found out. In sub-zero temperatures — some reports indicate negative 30 degrees fahrenheit — an estimated 50,000 protesters flooded Minneapolis to demand that ICE immediately leave their city. The crowd is a stark expression of widespread anger at Trump’s war on immigrants.
We’re in Minneapolis where over 10,000 people are out in the streets in sub-zero temperatures to oppose ICE terror. This is an obvious display that people are sick of Trump’s war on immigrants. We can build on this momentum, strengthening a nationwide movement to #AbolishICE!

The day also marked an important advance of the labor movement’s role in the fight for immigrant rights. Pushed from below by rank-and-file workers, unions representing teachers, bus drivers, hospitality workers, nurses, and other important sectors voiced strong support for the protests, with some union leaders saying they would support their members who do not work. The day was a merging of the labor movement and an anti-racist social movement at a level unseen in the United States in recent decades, and it was only a fraction of the power unions have to shut everything down.

Minneapolis, Los Angeles stands with you! ICE OUT OF EVERYWHERE
Minneapolis was not alone. Solidarity demonstrations were held in cities across the country. The march in New York City filled at least nine blocks. Again, labor played an important role with the United Federation of Teachers and PSC-CUNY members forming large contingents in the march. In Los Angeles — a city which recently forced Trump to withdraw the National Guard — SEIU 721 and other unions called an action in solidarity, bringing out public sector workers who play a key role running the city.

NEW: Portland, Maine just joined Minneapolis with a MASSIVE anti-ICE protest tonight.
GOOD.
They thought Minnesota would break in silence. Instead it sparked a chain reaction.

Other solidarity actions were held in Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Newark, Kansas City, West Palm Beach, San Francisco, and more. Over the next few days and weeks it will become clearer what this means for the fight against the Far Right in the United States. What is clear is that the resistance to ICE in Minneapolis, with labor playing a clear role, has changed the discussion. People are beginning to understand our own power as workers — strengthened by popular support for immigrants — to shut everything down with clear demands to Abolish ICE! Close all the detention centers! Jail Jonathan Ross and all the killer cops! And end ICE terror!
