On January 22, as workers across Minnesota were gearing up for a day of “no work, no school, no shopping” against ICE terror, Vice President J.D. Vance traveled to Minneapolis to “turn down the temperature.” This was Vance’s stated intention. But on the ground in the city which is currently at the forefront of resisting the Far Right, the Vice President smugly and shamelessly defended the terror that his administration has subjected immigrants and their allies to.
At a press conference, a reporter pointed out that residents of Minneapolis are saying that ICE’s presence is making them feel less safe, and asked Vance for his response. Vance completely justified the war that the Trump administration is waging on immigrants and their allies. As he put it, “This is the inevitable consequence of a state and local government that have decided they’re not gonna cooperate with immigration enforcement.”
Q: What do you say to people here in Minnesota who say it’s the overwhelming presence of ICE officers and their tactics that make them feel unsafe?VANCE: This is the inevitable consequence of a state and local government that have decided they’re not gonna cooperate with immigration enforcement
What is the “consequence” Vance is referring to? It’s the murder of Renee Nicole Good, a legal observer that ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot directly in the face while she was driving away from him. It’s ICE attacking a family in their car with flashbangs and tear-gas, leading to the hospitalization of a 6-month-old baby. It’s ICE thugs abducting 5-year-old Liam Ramos on his way home from pre-school after arresting his father.
Vance directly defended the arrest of Ramos at his press conference, while normal people expressed horror across social media, circulating a devastating image of Ramos in a cute blue hat and a facial expression conveying trauma that many of us cannot even begin to comprehend.
Liam Ramos, a preschooler ICE detained the five-year-old Minnesota boy as he returned home from school and transported him to a detention center in Texas.

Vance continued his shameless apologies for Gestapo-inspired violence in an interview on the far-right Newsmax channel. Joking with the ““reporter”” about protesters in Minneapolis Vance said, “It takes a certain level of commitment to sex offender criminal aliens to stand outside in negative 40-degree temperatures and attack the Vice President of the United States.”
Mind you, this man who falsely claims protesters are sex offenders serves a president who has been exposed as part of Jeffrey Epstein’s pedophile ring, and is actively covering up these sex crimes.
Reminder that Vance, who falsely claims protesters are “sex offenders,” serves a president who was part of Jeffrey Epstein’s pedophile ring and is helping to cover up those crimes.

What else is there to say? Vance could not have made more clear his inhumanity and hypocrisy. He certainly didn’t “turn down the temperature,” but it would be foolish to think he was ever interested in that. The only shame is that there were no signs whatsoever that Vance and the administration were scared. But they should be. They should be terrified because Minneapolis is showing that these fucking monsters are few, and workers, students, and people in solidarity with immigrants are many.
Today we have an opportunity to make that very clear, and to set the stage for a new chapter of the movement against ICE, one that wields the power of labor to shut everything down and which snowballs across the country. Let’s show Vance our exact “level of commitment” to crushing him, ICE, and anyone who comes for our immigrant neighbors.
