Shut The System written in red on a ski slope in Davos

Activists have cut power to Davos snow machines and left blood-red messages for delegates to the World Economic Forum.

Davos ‘death cult’

Activists from underground climate group Shut The System sabotaged snow machines on the Davos ski slopes on 19 January. This happened as international power holders and billionaires flocked to the Swiss ski town for the World Economic Forum (WEF) starting on 20 January.

The saboteurs cut power cables supplying snow machines across the Jakobshorn mountainside. They used natural pigment to write blood-red messages alongside the ski runs. These stated: “Summit of Delusion” and “Shut the System”.

A Shut The System spokesperson said:

WEF is a death cult for the financial elites. Each year, the world’s wealthiest fly to Davos by private jet and helicopter to network and get stinking rich by any means, no matter the cost to life – all while the poor get poorer and the climate emergency escalates.

Nowadays Davos uses machines to create fake snow because global warming prevents that happening naturally. But they will do anything to prolong their hedonistic lifestyles without having to confront the truth – they are the problem.

Each year, world leaders, key financial players and a rising influx of billionaires head to Davos and discuss how to address issues such as poverty and climate change. But the WEF has been doing this during decades of rising inequality and greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2020, WEF stated that missing the 2C target for global warming would mean “climate apocalypse”. Many experts say that reaching this target will be impossible without a significant transformation of the economy.

The Shut The System spokesperson added:

The 2C limit is not impossible. It is simply impossible for the 1% to contemplate because any legitimate pathway for limiting global warming threatens their disproportionate wealth and power.

The Davos summit is increasingly facing criticism for its lack of transparency and inaction. A small fraction of the conference is viewable on TV. But the main conversations happen behind closed doors. Investigations from recent years expose participants’ racism, hedonism and apathy towards the climate emergency.
