Gaza

Two years after Israel’s war of extermination on the Gaza Strip, Palestinian football is returning to the spotlight. The Gaza Revival Tournament marks a serious attempt to breathe life back into a sporting scene devastated by war, both humanly and structurally.

The tournament is not a routine sporting event. It is the first practical test of reviving organised sport in an environment still scarred by destruction.

Gaza — destroyed stadiums

The tournament takes place under extremely difficult conditions. Most official stadiums in Gaza have been partially or completely destroyed. Others have been turned into shelters for displaced families. With infrastructure in ruins, clubs have been forced to improvise. Small, temporary pitches are being created among the rubble, in public squares, and on empty lots. These spaces offer only the bare minimum needed to train and compete.

Despite scarce resources, clubs have begun preparing for the first official tournament since the war. Training relies largely on personal effort and self-funding, amid shortages of equipment and usable facilities.

Many players have lost teammates, homes, or family members. Yet they are returning to training with determination, driven by a shared desire to reclaim a sense of normal life.

A revitalising tournament beyond competition

The Palestinian Football Association says the tournament is part of a gradual return to sporting activity, adapted to current realities. The participation of 24 clubs reflects strong engagement with the initiative.

More than competition, the tournament carries a message of hope and defiance. It highlights unity within Palestinian sport despite the ongoing effects of war.

For players, the tournament offers more than a chance to compete. It provides psychological relief and a way to confront trauma left by the war. Several players describe stepping back onto the pitch — even one surrounded by rubble — as an act of self-recovery. It is proof that their dreams were not destroyed.

Temporary pitches have become symbols of resilience. Each kickoff is a declaration that will can outlast destruction. Every match played and every goal scored sends a clear message: Palestinian sport can rise again, even without stadiums or traditional facilities.

A first step on a long road

The revival tournament is only a beginning. It opens the door to rebuilding Gaza’s sporting life.

The challenge goes beyond organising matches. It includes rebuilding stadiums, rehabilitating players physically and psychologically, and sustaining sport under exceptional conditions.

With this tournament, football returns to Gaza not only as a game, but as moral resistance — and as proof that life and joy can still be found among the rubble.
