Mexico City has been plagued with high-profile night raids by criminal gangs, sometimes accompanied by police, invading and capturing properties throughout the capital.

César Cravioto, head of the Mexico City Government Secretariat, reported that within the framework of the Cabinet Against Dispossession program, which has been operating since April 2025 due to the growing number of cases, has achieved the restitution of 94 properties to their rightful owners, another 10 have been seized, and, as a result of monitoring the cases, six people have been arrested.

During the Mexico City Security Report, the official stated that there were 4,071 neighborhood assistance requests, of which 399 files were opened for the investigation of cases of dispossession, and of these, in 290 there were actions by the secretariat, although he did not specify what they were.

“I want to mention in this program that we are also adjusting some procedures of the program against dispossession. We had just one inter-institutional meeting last Tuesday, and we will have another one next Tuesday, to fine-tune this program and ensure it has the best results in 2026,” he said.

He acknowledged the work done by agencies such as the Legal Counsel, the Judiciary, the Public Registry of Property, among others, as it is an interdisciplinary task.

The Citizen’s Assistance Desk Against Property Dispossession, primarily of homes, operates on Tuesdays in the Zócalo. In this way, residents of Mexico City who have been affected by this crime, who are at risk, or who have been threatened, can receive help and advice every Tuesday at this location.

    I ask, because I see household furnishings and personal belongings in the street. Kids toys. Artwork. Musical instruments. This seems to be the personal property of families, not “criminal gangs, sometimes accompanied by police, invading and capturing properties throughout the capital.”
