BThe tribute to the combatants took place on the same day that the Cuban people gave them a heartfelt farewell along Rancho Boyeros Avenue, where they were transported in horse-drawn carriages to the headquarters of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

In a simple but moving ceremony, the embassy staff in Chile observed a minute of silence in remembrance of their brothers who fell heroically.

Speaking at the event, the First Secretary in charge of political affairs, Rosario Rodriguez, read an excerpt from the speech given by the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, at the tribute to the martyrs of Playa Giron.

“Our dead command, but let us not call them dead, let us say, as poet Nicolas Guillen did: that they live more than ever, that they will live eternally in the heartbeat of every Cuban.”

For his part, the Cuban ambassador to Chile, Oscar Cornelio Oliva, remembered Fidel Castro’s words at the funeral for the victims of the Barbados crime in 1976 when he stated: “We cannot say that pain is shared. Pain is multiplied. Millions of Cubans weep today alongside the loved ones of the victims of this abominable crime. And when an energetic and virile people weep, injustice trembles!”

That was not a slogan, nor a bombastic phrase; it was a warning to the enemies of the Revolution that Cuba is prepared to defend its independence and sovereignty and will not be intimidated by threats, he expressed.
