Israel’s authorities have charged a Givati Brigade soldier with spying for Iran in what they describe as one of the most serious security breaches in the apartheid country’s history.

While the soldier has been in custody for four months, Israeli courts had subjected the case to a gagging order. This is a reflection of the extent to which the case embarrasses Israel, which prides itself on its security and claims to represent all Jews.

The government has now admitted the existence of the case and claim that the soldier provided information and directions to Iranian intelligence operatives. Somewhat hypocritically, the authorities complain that Iran offered the arrestee cash as an incentive. He allegedly provided photos and video footage of sensitive Israeli facilities to Iranian agents, including material from inside IDF bases. Details of weapon systems and munitions were also handed over.

Charges laid against the alleged spy include “contact with a foreign agent, delivering information to the enemy, impersonation and obstruction of justice”. Potential penalties include execution.

The admission is a further blow to Israel’s supposed impregnability. Iranian hackers and agents have repeatedly accessed the occupation’s nuclear programme and have published footage from within nuclear facilities. In a recent demonstration of relative civility after Israel murdered civilian Iranian scientists, agents left a note and bouquet of flowers on the seat of a car belonging to one of Israel’s most senior nuclear scientists.
