Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s parent agency is demanding that Hennepin Healthcare — whose flagship Hennepin County Medical Center treated Renee Nicole Good after she was shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis — hand over its employees’ I-9 work-authorization forms, according to a memo I obtained.
“Ms. Good was in our ER and we had an operating room ready in case she made it out of the stabilization room,” a hospital employee told me. “Employees are terrified … of being taken by ICE.”
In an email to “union siblings,” AFSCME Council 5 / AFSCME Local 2474 said it has confirmed the hospital system will comply with a Department of Homeland Security request for access to employee I-9s — the federal employment eligibility verification paperwork employers maintain on their workers.
AFSCME said it is urging members to protest on Friday, Jan. 23, describing the demand as part of escalating immigration enforcement activity in the Twin Cities. The union warned that I-9s contain sensitive personal information and could be used to target workers based on immigration status, and it criticized Hennepin Healthcare leadership for cooperating with federal authorities.
