This weekend, thousands took to the streets across the United States in response to the January 7 murder of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over 1,000 actions in cities including Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York were called under the slogan, “ICE Out for Good.” The organizing coalition is backed by a variety of groups, including Indivisible, the organization behind the “No Kings” protests.
But these protests were not just about outrage at ICE. Many of the mobilizations directly called out Trump’s threats toward Latin America. While actions against Trump’s attacks were initially taken up by socialist organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America and Party for Socialism and Liberation, broader sectors organized under the slogan “No Kings” have been outraged by the prospect of another “war for oil.”
In New York City, where kidnapped Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro is currently being held, Left Voice marched with 10,000 people including members of DSA, PSL, PSC-CUNY which represents 30,000 education workers, community organizations, and social movement NGOs, as well as countless New Yorkers who are not in organizations but who see the importance of fighting Trump in the streets.

In Minneapolis, protests have continued for five days straight since Good was murdered. ICE has continued harassing the community, even showing up at public schools and harassing students. This prompted a contingent of teachers to join the protests. One of these teachers told Left Voice, “I think it’s important for teachers to show up so that we can be the voice for our students.”

Protests are not just limited to major cities in more liberal states. Protests also took place in many cities in deep red states including Savannah GA, Fort Worth TX, Columbus OH, Tucson AZ, Kenner LA.

This weekend’s protests show that people are fed up with Trump’s attacks on their immigrant neighbors and the militarization of their cities. While the Far Right portrays immigrants as violent criminals and the Trump administration ramps up its racist attacks, it’s clear that the real enemies are ICE and the federal forces that brutalize and murder with impunity.
Importantly, thousands are also seeing the connection between the violence the state inflicts domestically, and the imperialism that brutally subjugates our class siblings in places like Latin America. Using slogans like “No Kings, No ICE, No Wars,” many protesters are mobilizing to demand an end to U.S. intervention in Venezuela. Some unions, including PSC-CUNY and and UAW locals, joined this weekend’s mobilizations and have released statements opposing Trump’s threats and attacks on Latin America. As Veena, a member of DSA and SEIU told us at a protest in Los Angeles. “It’s time for our unions to take a strong stand. They’re the ones that can really make the difference.”

It’s essential that we keep mobilizing and showing our solidarity with immigrants in the United States and those living under the boot of U.S. imperialism abroad. Winning the struggle against the Far Right and imperialism will require the united force of the entire working class — including the labor movement, youth, and social movements. Workers make the world run and have the power to grind the economy to a halt. This means we can also put an end to imperialism, and to the violence inflicted at home.
