We begin the year with many good wishes, some personal, some familial, some collective, and others great wishes for the good of humanity. We do this because it is in our nature, in that seed that inspires us to begin a new period, even knowing that much of it depends on the people who have more power and whether it is used for the good or the bad of the community.
In international affairs, these first days of 2026 have begun with decisions that shake and involve our continent, Latin America, and the powerful United States of America.
In the early morning of January 3, following threats of invasion, illicit acts of stealing oil tankers, attacks on vessels off the coast resulting in the murders of alleged drug traffickers, flagrant violations of international law, and economic and commercial blockade measures, the US military bombed the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and kidnapped its constitutionally elected president, a process endorsed by its electoral bodies and also accepted and desired by the vast majority of the Venezuelan people; they also kidnapped the first lady, Cilia Flores.
Dignified governments like that of our country, Mexico, have condemned these acts [against Venezuela], but there are heads of state who have remained silent.
These actions represent the unchecked exercise of power, where the President of the United States can do whatever he deems convenient without anyone’s permission, disregarding all laws, and failing to consult or submit decisions that would be crucial for the good of his country or the rest of the world. The United States Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and the Senate, has been effectively sidelined from decision-making, leading us to question the very nature of American democracy, which, incidentally, has been criticized in this regard by Latin American countries.
The United States is the hegemonic economic power, it is the military, arms-producing power, but it cannot be allowed that there is a single power in the world that acts without law and without limit.

If only violent force, the force of arms, if only repression and subjugation prevail over reason, law, dialogue, and consensus, then the world descends into chaos. Fascism returns, manifesting itself in truly terrorist acts like those witnessed in Venezuela during these first days of January.
Dignified governments like that of our country, Mexico, have condemned these acts, many others have also spoken out in this regard, but there are heads of state who have remained silent.
People around the world have held demonstrations of solidarity in plazas and streets, supporting respect for the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and condemning the imperialist actions of the fascist Trump administration. Fortunately, actions have also been taken within the United States itself against the actions of the U.S. military and its commander-in-chief. The mayor of New York City made strong statements against Trump’s foreign policy and its constant interference.
But it not only demonstrates the neo-fascist actions of the US administration abroad, but also within the United States against those it considers the internal enemy: migrants and all those who show support for the fight for the right to migrate, including Democratic legislators.
Today they are considered criminals and victims of violence simply for having a darker skin color; undocumented immigrants are persecuted, tortured, imprisoned in inhuman conditions, and transferred to prisons in El Salvador, Guantanamo, and Central Africa.
The invasion of Venezuela with bombings in different residential and military areas, the kidnapping of the president and his wife, show the fascist face of a government that has no respect for anyone’s life and dignity.
