Hot on the heels of Donald Trump’s illegal invasion of Venezuela and capture of president Maduro, the US president is now reportedly eyeing up Greenland. Actually, it’s not just Greenland, is it? Here’s a running total of the countries that Trump has threatened just this year:
UPDATED LIST of countries the Trump administration has threatened to invade, annex, or otherwise attack in the 85 hours of 2026 so far:
Venezuela
Cuba
Greenland

It won’t stop with Venezuela – as Greenland may be next
Of course, this is far from the first time that the US dictator has threatened Greenland. However, the shock invasion of Venezuela has made the prospect of annexation far more real:
Donald Trump won’t stop with Venezuela.
Cuba, Greenland, Colombia and Mexico are already in his crosshairs.
This is U.S. imperialism, plain and simple — and it must be resisted in all its forms.

For his part, Trump has ramped up threats against Greenland with claims that the US needs to claim the territory “for defense”:

The “guardrails” have been gone for a long time now – I don’t know where you’ve been looking:
BREAKING: – Trump just now:
“We Need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and the European Union needs us to have it and they know that.”
The European Union literally has Greenland.
Why the F–k would they need us to have it, you authoritarian imbecile? pic.twitter.com/AranFSVc4F— Brian Krassenstein (@krassenstein) January 5, 2026
Apparently, Greenland is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships”. The obvious solution, of course, is to surround it with even more American warships:
Trump: “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense.”
Worth noting that Denmark already allows the US to station as many troops and assets as it wishes in Greenland. The US has no strategic reason or sensible justification for annexing Greenland. pic.twitter.com/b9fWZcaeP8

It’s not about military strategy
If anyone cares to ask Denmark – of which Greenland is an autonomous territory – they’ve made it absolutely clear that they don’t want to be annexed by the US:

Of course, Trump isn’t asking – and he’s not threatening to buy Greenland, either:

It “makes absolutely no sense” to talk about the US ‘needing’ to invade Greenland on a military-strategic level because this is not about military strategy. Just like Trump invaded Venezuela for its oil, he’ll invade Greenland for its rare earth minerals:
They are openly threatening to conquer other countries now to strip them of their precious minerals and natural resources.
Greenland has about 1.5 million tons of rare earth element reserves, ranking it in the top 10 globally — and Trump and his oligarch donors want it. pic.twitter.com/xF60vIaDiY

While we’re on the subject, a lot of commenters on social media picked up on far-right political advisor Katie Miller’s inflammatory image of Greenland overlaid with the US flag:
Quick reminder that Greenland, a sovereign nation within the Kingdom of Denmark and one of our closest allies, is actually member of NATO. Katie Miller and the entire Trump administration should seriously go fuck themselves. pic.twitter.com/EAfmWvSv7u

Cowardice in the face of tyranny
Hell, even the Lib Dems’ Ed Davie picked up on it. He also slipped in a swipe at Starmer’s utter cowardice in refusing to condemn Trump’s attack on Venezuela:
First Venezuela, next Greenland?
You don’t suck up to bullies like Trump, he will just see it as a sign of weakness.
Keir Starmer needs to get on the phone to our European allies including the Danish PM, and show a united front against Trump’s threats. https://t.co/o80W3xjEmN

And, speaking of the utter cowardice of Labour politicians in the face of US empire-building, MP Mike Tapp couldn’t even bring himself to state that America shouldn’t invade Greenland:
.@MikeTappTweets refuses to say that the US should not attack Denmark and Greenland.
Moments later he declares that sticking to international law is what we stand for as a country. pic.twitter.com/5JsmGSLEfQ

Genuinely pathetic, even for a party where disappointment has become the norm. Speaking of which, Owen Jones pointed out the blatant hypocrisy of Europe’s “military alliance” with a country that flouts international law:
There it is, like clockwork!
When Trump annexes Greenland – which he will – Europe’s military alliance with the US will be exposed as a complete and utter farce. https://t.co/XUMs34TSmP pic.twitter.com/NHNgMfzw7N

The fact that Greenland is a territory of Denmark does not matter. Denmark’s status as a NATO member does not matter. The will of the people of Greenland does not matter.
As long as Trump is permitted to do whatever he pleases, both within and without US borders, he will continue to do so. And, as Starmer and the cowards in the UK’s parliament have so succinctly demonstrated, Trumps ‘allies’ are too terrified of him to utter so much as a word of condemnation.
