MANILA – Standing in solidarity with the people of Venezuela, Filipino activists under the multi-sectoral formation Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) marched along Kalaw Avenue in Manila to denounce the military aggression of the United States government.

The US bombed Venezuela’s capital Caracas and abducted President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, which the Venezuelan government said is a violation of their sovereignty and collective right to self-determination, and international law.

“We are here to denounce the US and the governments complicit to its military aggressions, such as the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,” said Bayan Secretary General Mong Palatino during the solidarity program today, Jan. 5.

Bayan emphasized that the aggression in Venezuela is not just about combating drugs and crime. “It is driven by the same motive that has fueled countless wars across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East: control over strategic resources and the suppression of independent, anti-imperialist projects.”

In 2025, the US bombed at least seven countries including Syria, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela. According to the Cost of War Project, the US also gave more than $21 billion to Israel in its genocidal war on Gaza.

“The imperialist US targets Venezuela because it nationalizes its oil industry, driving away the American corporations,” ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio said.

Venezuela has the largest oil reserve in the world with more than 300 billion barrels. The US is claiming ownership of this oil, as suggested by White House deputy chief of staff.

“We do not want to be a colony,” Venezuelan national Tulio Camaco said during the solidarity program. “We have to be united, all of us, against imperialism and injustice. For sovereignty and freedom of our people.” (RVO, RTS)
