U.S. imperialism carried out a massive bombing raid on Venezuelan territory in the early hours of the morning using warplanes and combat helicopters. This attack represents a leap forward in imperialist interference in Venezuela, with direct military aggression on the territory of the Latin American country. Explosions have been reported in several locations, including strategic military installations such as Fort Tiuna and La Carlota Air Base. Explosions were also reported in the country’s capital, Caracas, and in the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira.
For its part, the Venezuelan government denounced the U.S. attack and took to state television to announce the first measures in response: “The immediate deployment of the Command for the Integral Defense of the Nation and the Organs of Direction for Integral Defense in all states and municipalities of the country has been ordered.” A state of internal unrest was also declared, and it was announced that the country would immediately resort to armed struggle.
On Truth Social, President Donald Trump claimed that Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been captured. He also stated, “They took away our oil rights. We had a lot of oil there. They expelled our companies. And we want it back.” If there was any doubt, Trump’s post says the quiet part out loud, naming the imperialist interests behind the bombing.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated that he was unaware of Maduro’s whereabouts and demanded that the United States provide proof of life for the Venezuelan president.
For his part, in a new act of blatant sycophancy, Argentine President Javier Milei celebrated the bombing of Venezuelan territory and Maduro’s capture by writing, “Freedom advances. Long live freedom, damn it!”
We condemn this imperialist aggression by the United States, and it is essential to stand up and fight back. We must mobilize across the continent to demand the immediate and total cessation of U.S. military intervention, the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Venezuela and the Caribbean, and the lifting of the blockade and sanctions that affect the working class and oppressed. We affirm our unconditional solidarity with the Venezuelan people against all imperialist interference.
In the belly of the imperialist beast, it is essential to speak out and mobilize immediately. We must call on our unions to issue statements, like one PSC-CUNY, the faculty, staff, and graduate assistant union at the City University of New York, has already issued, and also to mobilize members to the streets against this attack. All those who mobilized in the movement for Palestine against U.S. brutality in Gaza must also stand up against this new blatant imperialist aggression, building a stronger anti-imperialist movement across the country.
U.S. troops out of the Caribbean and Latin America! And extend the anti-imperialist mobilization across the continent!
