The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education has revealed shocking figures on Israeli violations against the education sector in 2025 in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, confirming the killing of 7,903 students and educational staff and the injury of 11,469 others in one of the bloodiest and most targeted periods for education in modern Palestinian history.
Gaza: an educide by Israel
In a statement documenting the attacks from the beginning of the year until 31 December, the ministry explained that school students were the most affected group, with 6,910 students killed, the overwhelming majority of them in the Gaza Strip (6,876) compared to 34 in the West Bank. while 9,138 students were injured, including 8,846 in Gaza and 292 in the West Bank.
In higher education, the ministry reported that 578 university students were killed, including 574 in the Gaza Strip and four in the West Bank, in addition to more than 1,419 students being injured to varying degrees and 204 students being arrested in the West Bank, as part of a systematic policy of targeting academic life.
Educational and academic staff were not spared from these attacks, with 302 teachers and administrators killed in schools in the Gaza Strip and 658 others injured. In contrast, in the West Bank, two education workers were killed, seven were injured and 30 were arrested. The ministry also documented the killing of 111 academics and workers at Gaza universities and the injury of 247 others, in addition to the arrest of 18 academics and 120 students from West Bank schools.
An ongoing genocide
These figures come in the context of Israel’s war of genocide against the Gaza Strip since 8 October 2023, which has lasted for two years and resulted in more than 71,000 martyrs and 171,000 wounded, in addition to the destruction of about 90 per cent of the civilian infrastructure. with UN estimates indicating that the cost of reconstruction could reach $70 billion.
Since the start of the aggression, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has also witnessed an unprecedented escalation, resulting in the killing of more than 1,104 Palestinians and the wounding of about 11,000, in addition to the arrest of more than 21,000 Palestinians, in a scene that reflects the widening circle of Israeli targeting to reach people and institutions, foremost among them education, as a fundamental pillar of the survival and resilience of Palestinian society.
