A statement released by the Holy See Press Office refers to the Mass celebrated by the Pope in St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as his subsequent remarks at noon, following the Angelus prayer.
After reciting the Catholic prayer from the window of his study in the Apostolic Palace, before thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father recalled that “since January 1, 1968, by the will of Pope St. Paul VI, today is celebrated as the World Day of Peace.”
The leader of the Catholic Church asked that “we begin today to build a year of peace, disarming our hearts and abstaining from all violence.” “Let us all pray together for peace, first in the nations bloodied by conflict and poverty, but also in our homes, in the families wounded by violence and pain,” he said.
“The Jubilee, which is about to conclude, has taught us to cultivate the hope of a new world,” the Bishop of Rome added, and he emphasized the importance of transforming “offenses into forgiveness, pain into consolation, and resolutions to do good into good works.”
Last December 18, the Pope released his message for this World Day of Peace, in which he urged progress toward ending wars, for which it is necessary to foster dialogue and mutual trust.
