We have received confirmed information that early this morning, combat troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines attacked a unit of the New People’s Army in Barangay Cabacao in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro. The NPA unit was able to withdraw from the site, although we are still ascertaining details of their condition.

The unit of the NPA was in the area observing the CPP’s unilateral ceasefire declaration (December 31 and January 1), and took advantage of the opportunity to render medical and other services to the local communities, mostly Mangyan people, and mark with them the turn of the new year.

The attack of the AFP shattered the peace in the area. In addition to unleashing a heavy volume of gunfire, the AFP deployed helicopter gunships to strafe and fire rockets, in complete disregard for civilian communities in the vicinity, causing stress and traumatizing residents.
