The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, strongly criticized the United States for its increasing military and political pressure on Venezuela, urging dialogue, respect for sovereignty and peaceful negotiations.

In an interview with China Media Group (CMG), President Burton called on Washington to abandon what she described as aggressive and intimidating tactics against Venezuela and the Latin American and Caribbean region.

“Every government deserves respect,” Skerrit told local media. “Because we are smaller and less equipped doesn’t give anyone the right to subvert us or push us back into subservience.”

The call came hours after the U.S. Navy seized a Venezuelan oil tanker in international waters—an act Caracas labels piracy. Skerrit said the region is now “singing with one voice” demanding that the United States heed the collective plea for sovereignty.

“Let us settle disputes through dialogue, not through coups, blockades or military threats,” she stressed, appealing to Washington to “listen and respect Venezuela’s suffering.”
