The first preparatory meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) for the 11th anniversary of the historic Declaration of Zone of Peace (Havana, 2014) addressed US aggression in the Caribbean Sea and threats against Venezuela on Friday, December 26.

In this context, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil affirmed that Venezuela is “the most stable revolutionary democracy in the region” and highlighted the 19 consecutive quarters of economic growth and full social stability in the Bolivarian Republic.

He asserted that, despite the “siege” imposed by the United States, the Venezuelan people defend peace and national sovereignty, relying on a cohesive Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and a leadership that calls upon all nationalist political forces to defend international law and the country’s sovereignty.

During his address, Gil also accused “US imperialism” of carrying out aggressions in the Caribbean that threaten world peace. He affirmed that Venezuela defends international law and enjoys “full” international support for its government. The Foreign Minister warned that if these actions continue, the world would be “on the verge of disruption” or a new holocaust, and he called for the defense of a new world order based on sovereignty and non-intervention in the internal affairs of nations.

The meeting’s program included an update on US aggressions in the Caribbean and the threat of war against Venezuela, as well as the reading of the letter sent by President Nicolás Maduro to the presidents and peoples of the world. The CELAC Act declaring the region a Zone of Peace was also read.

Several regional representatives addressed the meeting. Among them were Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister, Valdrák Jaentschke; the president of the Colombia Humana party, Gloria Flórez; the head of the International Relations Department of the Communist Party of Cuba, Emilio Lozada García; the Mexican congresswoman and president of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Venezuela, Isi de la Luz; the president of the United Left Movement of the Dominican Republic, Miguel Mejía; and the foreign relations secretary of the Libre Party of Honduras, Gerardo Torres Zelaya.

As part of the proposed actions, it was suggested that, between January 5 and 11, the CELAC declaration be submitted to the parliaments of the member states, along with a document demanding its implementation. For the weeks of January 12-24, it was proposed that the CELAC declaration be submitted to the offices of the United Nations (UN).
