Authorities granted precautionary measures in accordance with the current legal framework.
On Thursday, Venezuela’s Ministry for Penitentiary Services confirmed the release of 99 people who had been detained for their involvement in acts of violence and incitement to hatred recorded after the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.

So far, Venezuelan authorities have released more than 2,100 citizens charged in connection with those crimes. Most of the releases took place between November 2024 and March 2025. Those freed took part in actions aimed at rejecting the mandate expressed by the Venezuelan people at the ballot box and at generating destabilizing scenarios that affected national peace.
In response to the events of 2024, the Executive and Judicial branches decided to review each case individually and to grant precautionary measures in accordance with the current legal framework.
The Penitentiary Service said these releases represent a tangible expression of the Venezuelan state’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and the exercise of balanced justice. The releases are also part of President Nicolas Maduro’s policies, which are aimed at guaranteeing full respect for human rights, including for individuals who engaged in actions against sovereignty, institutional order, and social harmony.

“Even in a scenario marked by imperialist siege and multilateral aggression against the country, the Venezuelan state guarantees all detainees treatment based on respect, legality, and comprehensive care. The Bolivarian government will continue to work firmly and responsibly for peace, justice and the defense of national sovereignty,” the official statement said.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab said the release of detainees does not imply impunity, noting that authorities continue to investigate the events triggered by the so-called “Small Commandos,” criminal structures linked to the far-right opposition that carried out actions such as cold-blooded killings, attacks on public institutions, and assaults on international observers.
Saab said the Small Commandos acted in a coordinated manner with the intention of sabotaging the 2024 elections and destabilizing the country. In that process, they committed hate crimes that also targeted members of the Venezuelan security forces, including Sgts. Jose Torrents and Jormen Martinez.
