The Republic of Korea donated 24,600 tons of rice to Cuba to support food assistance programs aimed at people in situations of greatest socioeconomic vulnerability on the island.
The delivery was confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Asian nation and will be carried out through the United Nations System in Cuba, specifically through the World Food Programme (WFP).

The first part of the shipment has already been unloaded at the port of Santiago de Cuba, in the eastern part of the country, a region identified by its high levels of social vulnerability and limited access to basic goods. This delivery will allow the WFP to double its rice quotas in that area for five months.
The distribution will be carried out using the usual mechanisms of the humanitarian program, prioritizing groups previously identified by United Nations agencies and focusing on households with urgent food needs.

The remaining volume of the donation will arrive through the port of Havana and will be distributed gradually to the rest of Cuba’s provinces. According to the authorities involved, this portion will be delivered every two months for a year, with the aim of doubling deliveries to the beneficiary population outside of eastern Cuba.
To date, the volumes allocated per province and the exact distribution schedules have not been specified, as these will depend on internal logistics and transportation availability in each region.

This aid also addresses the need to strengthen the response to recent emergencies, including the damage caused by weather events such as Hurricane Melissa, which resulted in the loss of homes, disruptions to the supply chain, and impacts on local food production.
