On Thursday, Russia condemned what it described as attempts by the United States to destabilize Venezuela and demanded that the conflict between the two countries be resolved through legal channels.

“We strongly condemn these acts (the actions of the United States regarding Venezuela) and demand stability and respect for legality in the maritime sphere,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, stressing that Moscow “advocates de-escalation of the current situation and the preservation of trust and predictability.”
The Eussian diplomat described recent developments in the Caribbean as “legal chaos,” saying that “practices we thought we had long forgotten have been revived, such as the illegal seizure of others’ assets, piracy, assaults and banditry.”
In this context, Zakharova appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve the issue “within the framework of international legal norms,” in line with his “pragmatism and rationality.”

Since August, the United States has maintained a significant deployment in the Caribbean, near Venezuelan waters, under the pretext of combating international drug trafficking.
On multiple occasions, however, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has denounced the U.S. military deployment as a threat of invasion against his country and linked it to an attempt to engineer a “regime change” in the South American nation.
On Monday, in what was seen as a tacit confirmation of those intentions, Trump said Maduro would be “smart” to choose to step down from power and warned him that if he “acts tough,” it would be “the last time” he does so.
