As the year draws to its end, the United States does not seem to have wrapped up its packed war agenda across the globe, which has had a considerable focus in the West Asia region.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement on Friday, December 19 that the US struck over 70 targets of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in different areas across Syria earlier during the day, in cooperation with the Jordanian forces.

The statement indicated that the targets included infrastructure and weapons sites belonging to the group. It also added that the large-scale operation was launched in response to an ambush attack carried out by ISIS against the US and its partner forces in the Arab country on Saturday, December 13.

According to CENTCOM, three US citizens, including two soldiers and one civilian interpreter were killed in the attack.

Syria’s interim government claims it dismantled ISIS cell in Damascus

On Sunday, December 21, Syria’s interim government announced that Syrian internal security units, and the General Intelligence Directorate dismantled a cell affiliated with ISIS, and arrested its leader in the Daraya area, southwest of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Analysts suggest that the operations launched by the US and Jordan on the one hand, and the new Syrian government on the other apparently constitute the beginning of an extensive military and security campaign against ISIS, which will presumably continue.

Türkiye will seemingly play a significant role in the prospective campaign, as an ally of both the Trump administration and Al-Sharaa administration.

On Monday, December 22, the Syrian government and the Turkish government declared in a joint statement that Damascus and Ankara discussed a number of issues of common interest, including “efforts to counter terrorism, fight ISIS, and prevent its reemergence in Syria, alongside developing a shared vision for northeastern Syria.”
