“The most alarming situation is unfolding around Venezuela, where Washington has set as its goal the removal of the country’s president, who was legitimately elected. At the same time, steps are being taken to block maritime traffic and air flights in the region, which violate international law,” Gerasimov commented during a meeting with foreign military attaches.
Also on Thursday, the Kremlin urged the United States to exercise caution regarding the situation surrounding Venezuela, warning it could have serious implications for the entire Western Hemisphere.
“We are observing an escalation of tensions in the region and consider this potentially very dangerous. Venezuela is our ally and partner,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, adding that Moscow maintains regular, high-level contacts with Caracas.

Since August, U.S. President Donald Trump has deployed a strong U.S. military presence in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating international drug trafficking. On Tuesday, he announced a “total blockade” against sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.
The following day, the U.S. president went further, claiming that Venezuela had stripped U.S. companies of oil rights and saying he wants them back.
In response to these acts of aggression and harassment, Venezuela requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The date for the meeting, however, has not yet been set.
