The man accepted, from the beginning, his responsibility for the crime that shocked the world in 2022.

“It is true. There is no doubt that I did it,” Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, said before the Nara District Court during the first hearing.

Following his arrest, the defendant underwent a six-month psychiatric evaluation and was declared fit to face a trial.

The assassination occurred while Abe was delivering a speech in support of candidates from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the organization through which he served as prime minister from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020.

This trial marks a key moment in Japan’s recent history, not only because of the political impact of the assassination, but also because of the debate it has generated regarding the security of leaders and gun control in the country.

The verdict is expected to be announced in January 2026.
