On Wednesday, Venezuela requested an emergency UNSC meeting following the blockade announced by Trump. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, conveying China’s support amid escalating U.S. measures against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.
Trump announced this week a “total blockade” against sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, marking a significant escalation of the military deployment he launched in August in Caribbean waters under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.
Caracas, however, says the move is aimed at promoting a “regime change.” In recent weeks, Beijing has condemned U.S. actions, labeling them “interference” in Venezuela’s internal affairs.
