President Trump is expected to announce plans to launch a war with Venezuela this evening when he addresses the nation at 9:00 pm EST, a high-placed source on Capitol Hill has told Antiwar.com. Also, earlier in the day, Tucker Carlson told Judge Andrew Napolitano that he has heard from a member of Congress that Trump […]

“Police action”. Bush bypassed Congress to invade Iraq under emergency powers, and since we’ve called fentanyl a WMD, all Trump has to do is EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING THING: “it’s a matter of national security for us to take military action against Venezuela immediately”.

This only gets him a limited window to deploy troops before Congress has to weigh in, but that gives him time to manufacture more consent or get SCOTUS to tell him it’s totally OK to declare war via executive order.

Yeah there’s literally already precedent now that the president can unilaterally legally declare an action which may embroil the country in a 22 year long war which they ultimately, let’s be generous and say “back out of”

We can criticize almost all of Trump’s actions at this point to be unconstitutional but not this.

“There’s WMDs in Venezuela that are an immediate threat to the United States” legalizes that action

According to what the US allowed to become true by not holding their public servants to account, and rather being effectively subservient to and less than their politician “leaders” they elect infrequently, often based on dynasties and business arrangements.

I mean this is how history should speak of whatever this age comes to be called.

I’m still hoping that, if the Democrats win the next election (and, if there is a next election!) that the US is able to do some serious soul-searching and reject things like …

        • Military action without a declaration of war by Congress.
        • Executive orders to push through legislation that’s otherwise unconstitutional.
        • Court-stacking.

Administrations on both sides have done this since FDR and the New Deal (and possibly before; I don’t know). They’ve been setting the scene for someone like Trump to come along and continue the tradition with some astoundingly vile abuses of power.

Man. I have to be honest, from where I’m sitting this seems like a very lofty proposition. It barely feels possible now but I agree that is exactly what I hope we see.

But, I’m not there. I’m in Canada, and I like to think I know a thing or two and I’ve worked with Americans for decades, been countless times. I would never presume to know your country or people though like you.

There’s nothing id rather see right now my brother or sister or sibling. I wish you the best of luck

I’m in Australia (and before that, New Zealand). So I’m in the same boat - seems lofty, but I’m really hopeful that it happens!

We’re not as isolated as you might think, though. The MAGA movement has, sadly, helped to shape the development of our own right-wing parties here. I don’t just hope that the US gets it shit together for their sake - they’re corrupting our politics as well.
