The GB News channel and Carole Malone, one of its least pleasant presenters (in a tough field), have been forced to issue a formal apology, live, to Doria Ragland, the mother of Meghan Markle. Malone had falsely claimed that Ragland, who runs a California care-home firm, had spent time in jail.

Malone had claimed that Markle had been raised by her father because her mother was in prison – and had to admit that she simply took the claim from online disinformation without checking it before repeating it:

GB News and shoddy journalism

Carole Malone is no stranger to shoddy and hateful journalism. In 2009 her then-employer The News of the World was forced to publicly acknowledge that her claim that ‘illegal’ immigrants received ‘free cars’ was entirely without foundation. In 2012 she caused horror by claiming on an ITV programme that the parents of six children killed in an arson attack probably brought it on themselves by claiming too much in benefits. And,  in 2020 Malone told Black MP Dawn Butler, who had been pulled over by police for driving while Black, that the Met Police force is not racist, despite an abundance of reports from Macpherson to Casey to Daniels all concluding otherwise.

Earlier this year she caused outrage by suggesting that colonised people were poor and ignorant before they were colonised and that colonialism’s good side was being ignored:

We now have a generation that believes everything about colonisation was wrong. It wasn’t. There were some terrible things and there were some good things to come out of it. And that is about properly acknowledging your past…Those countries did not have money. They did not have the creativity. They did not have people in positions of power.

And in April she moaned, despite evidence, that the British justice system sentences Black men more harshly than white men, complaining that the system is “discrimination in its purest form against white men”.
